Personal
Gerald Lamar has worked in the construction or real estate business
for over 30 years. Born in Oklahoma City in the early 50's, Lamar
grew up in that community which cherishes strong family values. He
attended Oklahoma State University on a football scholarship.
While in college, he experienced his first construction
job working as a carpenter for one of the areas construction companies.
After graduating in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications,
he found employment as an announcer with a couple of radio stations
in Aspen, Co., before opening his own graphic design company. His
eye for design and his hands-on background in construction next led him to
San Francisco in the late 1970's.
Lamar worked hard in the "City by the Bay" to establish
Reliable Remodeling. There, he specialized in Victorian home renovations.
While the West Coast real estate market was lucrative, the central Texas
market was really beginning to take off. Lamar and his wife, Vicki
moved to Austin to be near her family.
During the first few years in Austin, Lamar began
buying, renovating and selling properties in the Central Business district.
He and his wife both obtained their real estate licenses . He went
to work for a local volume builder, where he learned the new-home construction
business from the ground up. When the market slacked off in the mid-80's,
he focused on commercial real estate brokerage. About 15 years ago,
Lamar ventured into residential construction and found his niche in the
market.
With his wife Vicki, by his side, Lamar started
in the 80's developing neighborhoods of multi-family upscale communities.
Prominent during this time was a 13-unit Mediterranean townhome development,
Woodlawn West; 1 22-unit development, Shoal Crest Townhomes,in central
Austin; and a gated community of 13 single-family homes in Zilker Skyline.
These and other development during this period were received so enthusiastically
by buyers that they sold out quickly.
In the 90's Lamar started acquiring "in-fill" lots
in the city to build spec homes. These were empty lots where established
neighborhoods had grown up around them. He has completed over 150 homes
in the inner city neighborhoods of Rosedale, Hyde Park, Enfield, Clarksville,
Tarrytown, Rollingwood, West Lake Hills, Las Lomas, Treemont, Lost Creek,
Courtyard, Lake Austin, Travis Heights, Lakewood, Great Hills and Brykerwoods.
The 2000's have been a mix of custom and speculative homes. There are many advantages to the customer when buying
a Lamar spec. First, all the pre construction hassles have already been
eliminated by the builder. Architectural designs, engineering, blueprints,
building permits, and many inspections have already been done by the time
the house is offered for sale. Interior designer choices are made
available to the buyer. This not only reduces buyer frustrations,
but decreases the time between sales contract and occupancy. Most
of Lamar's homes are designed in Hill Country or soft contemporary styles.
The use of two story open space makes common living areas, even baths,
more dramatics, and this is a hallmark of his homes.
Extensive use of both natural materials, such as
granite countertops, and premium man-made materials, such as Corian solid
surface countertops, distinguishes a Lamar home. Other materials,
such as mesquite wood flooring, open rafters, stripped bark posts and railings,
iron work, and stone, have been used in various Lamar Designs to bring
the outdoors inside.
Over 130 subs and suppliers contribute their time and
effort and are considered a part of the Lamar Homes team. The company
annual barbecues is a tribute to the working relationship with staff
and subs. This attitude toward his subs has resulted in a high degree
of loyalty and esprit de corps.
Lamar's small efficient staff is extremely accessible to the buyer.
He keeps his volume about 8 homes per year, at a level that is easily
manageable. This personal attention assures a high degree of quality control
and scheduling to make the construction process as smooth as possible.
Gerald Lamar and his wife, Vicki, who holds a real estate brokers license and a Bachelors
Degree in Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin are committed to
Austin and building excellence.
Lamar, an avid golfer, participates in about 10 charity tournaments each year.
In addition, he's a member of the Texas Capitol Area Builder's Association,
The Green Builder Program, Keep Austin Beautiful program, the Austin Board
of Realtors, and the West Lake Chamber of Commerce.
Summary
Gerald Lamar has built his reputation as a
premier, high quality home builder in the Austin area. You can expect dramatic
homes, designed in the Hill Country or soft contemporary styles, situated
on handpicked lots chosen for their location with an accent on views.
